They are only used as a tool to deter prospective link buyers from getting interested in your site. They also reduce your bargaining ability in case someone wants to advertise their business/products/website on your site. If you have a high Tool Bar PR (which everyone sees), you can make more deals and more money. If you want to make more money then you can confess your sins to the almighty Google and I am sure you will be forgiven if you agree to follow their way.
