The Japanese will open their embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi on Tuesday, 1 January, 2008. The new Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Hideto Mitamura said this in Lilongwe on 26 December, 2007 when he presented letters of credence to President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika.
With this development, all diplomatic transactions between Malawi and Japan will now be taking place locally. Previously, these transactions were handled through the Japanese Embassy in Zambia. I recall that earlier this year, when I applied for the Japanese government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship I had to route my documents through their Zambian office. Those of you who are familiar with such applications will agree with me that DHL costs can really bite. With the new Embassy in Malawi, such applications can even be hand delivered. I also hope that, with their increased presence in Malawi, they will increase the number of Embassy recommended scholarships for Malawian scholars from one to maybe five.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI am glad Japan is finally opening an embassy in Malawi. I once had a horrible experience trying to get a visa for Japan from Zambia at a time when communication between the two country’s was horrible. Like you said DHL is really expensive. I finally got a friend who was able to actually go there and get it done for me.
I hope they do offer more scholarships to Malawian students as well.Jpan has whole lot more to offer than just the education factor. The cultural experience in itself is deeply rewarding. By the way . I spent some time reading your blog and I have to commend you for doing a good job!

Lindiwe, the opening of the Japanese embassy was really long overdue considering the amount of business that goes on between the two countries. The number of Malawians traveling to Japan seems to be increasing as well.Having visas processed right here will be great.
About Japanese scholarships for Malawian students, the one that I know, as of now, is the Japanese Government scholarship for which they select only one Masters or PhD student every year.As pointed out in my post,it is my hope that now that they have their embassy here in Malawi they will increase the number of recipients.
Finally, many thanks for taking your time to read my blog. This is the place where I talk to the world.
