As a lecturer, marking is one of the jobs that I have to do time and again. And just like many lecturers, this is the kind of job that I really hate. I do not enjoy it at all. I enjoy preparing lessons, curriculum development, preparing examinations, exam invigilation etc but when it comes to marking, I really struggle with it.It spoils my joy as a lecturer.
Our students here at the Malawi Polytechnic, a constituent College of the University of Malawi sat for their end of year exams last December and as expected, the month of January was dedicated to marking. It has been hectic.I would mark a few scripts and abandon everything only to come a few hours later to mark a few scripts and do something else and so on.The trend is always like that during marking seasons. The two days that I spent in hospital provided a bit of a break but still more some deadlines had to met. As I started getting better, I had to make sure that I finished marking and submitted my grades in readiness for assessment meetings. Thank God, marking is now over. Will I do it again?Let’s wait and see!
Now that marking is over, I will be making final touches to my paper that has been accepted for publication in the Scientia Iranica International Journal of Science and Technology.

You seem to be a great teacher! Unfortunately at my college there are too many lecturers that seem to enjoy marking students and especially failing them. Good luck with that publication!

@Matt: I really do not enjoy doing it at all.If someone can design a computerized marking system that can mark analytical questions, I will be amongst the first people to buy it (assuming that the price will be reasonable). Thanks for the compliment concerning my publication. Are you into academics?
@Odzyskiwanie Danych:Great to hear that teachers at your college love teaching. But they should stop failing students unnecesarily.

I’m afraid the boredom you get in marking the scripts may affect grades you give your students. That explains why elec imavuta pa poly.

@pdimba:The fact I try to mark my scripts with
precision is the whole reason why marking bores me. If I could decide to mark haphazardly, I would not even complain that marking is boring because I would finish my marking duties in a very short period of time.
As a Christian, I have to make sure that after marking the scripts, the inner man does not convict me of doing a sub-standard job. As a Spirit filled Christian, I hope you now know what I mean.

As a university student myself, I just want to say that I do appreciate a good marker – when I have a professor that hands back an unmarked paper with a grade on the last page, I’m usually a little disappointed. I’m sorry it’s such a task but I would, and hopefully your students do, appreciate your work so much!

Having been a student a few years ago, I know the pains that students go through.Thats why I am always careful when marking student scripts even though I do not like the exercise.

Hi,
I can understand how you feel. You seems like a very good teacher with the natural teaching talent.
I think teaching has it pros and cons. The feeling of delivering a lesson is very nice. However, like what you said, marking can be very dry and boring.
