@Black on Campus:Thanks for sharing your thoughts.I get your point.I think the best approach would be the one which gives equal significance to both financial need and merit. Coming up with such a mechanism would not be difficult at all.

@Sleep Aid: I am also not very sure if the news report is true.Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa are generally understaffed.I was shocked to learn from the news report that some departments in the University of Malawi were overstaffed.But I am failing to comprehend the fact that high centers of education in the US, the most powerful country in the world, are also understaffed.

I’m so glad I came across this website. I especially enjoy the updates on educational and technological conditions outside of the U.S.

In this post, I am especially interested in the fee structure that you describe as most desirable for the University of Malawi. This strikes me a very supply-and-demand oriented, with the best students getting the greatest amount of funding, regardless of financial need.

Some U.S. institutions practice a very limited version of this, but many of the country’s most selective schools shun merit-based scholarships, privileging student economic need over academic achievement as the primary basis for funding.

I’m very surprised to hear that any higher center of education is over staffed. Here in the states we are always under staffed. Our children suffer from poor education and we are falling behind the rest of the world. I wish we would wake up and put more money into education instead of jails.
