An analysis of the recent search terms used by my visitors in Malawi and several other African countries shows that most of them land on my blog as they search for different types of scholarships. The most popular scholarship posts are as follows:
- Are you a PhD aspirant? Saitama is calling!
- Graca Machel Scholarships up for grabs! Malawian women, where are you?
- Tokyo, here I come! My PhD ambitions back on track!
- Japan to offer more scholarships to Malawian students
- Good news for doctoral and masters research aspirants
- Opportunities for Masters/PhD Students and Research Interns at Meraka Institute
- Any plans to increase the number of Google Scholarships for African students?
- The Godwin Jere Malawi Master’s Scholarship
In response to this growing need for scholarship related posts, I recently decided to write a post listing scholarships for students in Malawi and neighboring countries.
Before I started working on this post, Matthews told me that he was working on a similar thing on his site. He asked me to give him a quick list of scholarships that I knew so that they could be included in his list. So most of the scholarships that you will see here will generally be the same as those on Matthews site. The only difference might be that I will not focus on Malawi exclusively. As such, I will be adding new scholarships for students in Malawi’s neighboring countries and beyond based on the demand from those countries. The current list of scholarships is as follows:
- Rhodes Scholarship – Exclusive for Study at the University of Oxford, UK (for citizens of more than 20 countries including Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia etc).
- Gates-Cambridge Scholarship- Exclusive for study at University of Cambridge, UK (for citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom).
- Beit Trust (for citizens of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe).
- Commonwealth Scholarships (for all Commonwealth citizens)
- Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund (for students from developing countries including Malawi)
- British Council Chevening Scholarships (for students from over 100 countries including Malawi)
- Cannon Collins Trust ( for Southern African students)
- DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) (a wide range of scholarships for citizens of many countries)
- Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships (a wide range of scholarships for citizens of many countries). If you want to join me here in Tokyo, go for it!!!
- Fulbright Scholarships ( for citizens from more than 160 countries to study in the US)
- The African Network of Scientific and Technological institutions (ANSTI) Felowships (for the staff members of ANSTI member institutions)
- The Godwin Jere Malawi Master’s Scholarship
- The Graca Machel Scholarship (for disadvantaged women from Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa)
I will be updating this list regularly. So please bookmark this page. Wishing you all the best as you try your luck. Make sure that you follow all the necessary guidelines as you prepare your application documents!

Thanks for sharing once again. It is always hard for students to find quality compiled scholarship lists, so this will be very useful indeed.

Thanks a lot for posting this info. I am going to forward it to a few people I know who would benefit greatly from it.

This is quite useful, as you have taken a desire or interest that academically-minded students had, and you have provided more resources for them. This type of activity tends to preclude later activity of a similar type, such as running a scholarship foundation.

Thanks alot for such a wonderful display of resource material that will inevitably provide opportunity for talented African students and scholars to competitively uplift our continent.
I am a Ugandan Undergraduate medical student at Moi University in Eldoret Kenya faced with the dread of possibly dropping out of school due to lack of funds. I am in dire need of funds, could somebody possibly bail me out of this quagmire. Will be grateful for your kind help.
