Here is yet another evidence of the power of collaboration! Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. (HRI-JP), a subsidiary of Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Shimadzu Corporation have collaboratively developed the world’s first*1 Brain Machine Interface (BMI) technology. This technology uses electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) along with newly developed information extraction technology to enable control of a robot by human thought alone. It does not require any physical movement such as pressing buttons.
It is further reported that, since 2005, Honda and ATR have been conducting research and development of BMI technology exploring the potential of a new interface which connects people and machines. Honda is now looking into the possibility of applying this technology to a people-friendly human interface through integration with other technologies such as artificial intelligence technologies and/or robotics technologies.

Many things that we thought were in the realms of science fiction are now coming true. It is amazing what human brains can come up with given enough motivation and funding!

I just heard that scientists could tell with 80% accuracy what soft drink the test subjects preferred by measuring the amount of oxygen in specific areas of the frontal lobe using light. I can’t wait to see Steven Hawkings using one of these devices to work. This will be a great step in personal freedom for people with compromised motor skills.

The development of robot technology by Honda is in line with the attempt to bring substitute labor to an aging population that is also plagued with low influx of immigrant labor (due to complex cultural, legal reasons). Adding the direct brain-machine interface also seems consistent, as the elderly need to interact with robots in some robust way. But as I see it, having some sort of voice control might be better than using a direct brain-machine interface. Both voice and brain interfaces would require user-specific training (all users have different voices, different brain wave patterns). And voice just seems like a better route as a general solution to controlling robots. Just my opinion.

Hi Clement,
I don’t know if this is fantastic or just plain SCARY! The thing is, with technology progressing as it is, it’s just a matter of time before this sort of thing become common-place.
I have a theory that in a few years (or decades) from now, we won’t have mobile phones. We’ll all have implants in our heads which will enable us to receive “mobile phone” signals directly, and a “mind control” system similar to the one you post about here will be used to control the making and receving of calls.
Future kid/parent conversation:
“Mommy, can I have my implant, PLEEEEEZE”
“No dear,not until you’re 16″
“But Mommy, Britney Kowalski has hers, and she’s ony 10″
“Yes dear, but she’s also got tattoos, and she lives in a trailer park. They’re not nice people dear”.
Cheers
Bill

This is awesome for sure! I really like how far we have come in technological advancements. It is amazing the amount of steps forward we have taken even in the past 10 years. I am only 22… so I am hoping that I will see many great future advancements in my time!

This is pretty cool. I think someday we will have robotics involved all over our lives. As of now, the so called “computer revolution” is still in its infancy. We’ve come a long way and made terrific strides, but fundamentally we have not advanced very much in terms of how pervasive computers are in our day to day activities; there is so much room to grow.
