In the absence of national ID cards, the government of Malawi has resorted to using voter registration cards to disburse fertilizer subsidy coupons. So far, reports are indicating that there is less coupon fraud with the new system.

However, I find the new system to be squarely against the Jehovah’s Witnesses who do not vote because of their faith. As a result, they do not have voter registration cards which are a requirement for one to access the coupons.
But as bona fide citizens of the republic, they have a right to benefit from the fertilizer subsidy program. Has the Malawi government put in place special systems for these people to get their coupons?
As we look at this issue, can someone, who is in the know, tell us government’s plans on the issue of national IDs?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThis is an amazing story. Indeed why should legitimate citizens be deprived of any benefit because they do not have one piece of document. One of course presumes that they will have some other proof of identity!

I’m sure that the government will povide some sort of resolution to this matter. It is inconsiderate and against the law of the land to deny others from being able to benefit equally.
