For some time, I have been looking for a mechanism that would enable my blog visitors to make online donations for Karonga earthquake victims. I searched all over the net, but without success. As I was about to give up, I discovered that the Malawi Washington Association (MWA), a registered non-political, non-regional, inter-ethnic group organization based in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, has a Paypal button on its website that enables visitors to make online donations for the Karonga quake victims. I asked them for the code and they have gladly given it to me and here is the button:
The Malawi Washington Association was founded in 1994 by Peter Kapakasa, Stafford Chipungu, Jonathan Kamkwalala, and the late Henri Nsanjama. These four Malawians aimed at forming an organization that not only united the growing number of Malawians in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland, but also the growing number of Malawians in the host countries of the United States of America and Canada. Currently, the organization has over a hundred members and a number of supporters both in and out of the Malawian community.
Toward the end of December 2009, the Malawi Washington Association organised a fundraising event for the Karonga quake victims. They have since donated MK506,200 to the Department of Poverty and Disaster Management Affairs in Malawi to help victims. I have also been in touch with Mr Edward Naming’ona, the president of this association; he is very committed to this cause. You can, therefore, rest assured that your money will be used for the intended purpose.

How nice of you to really find ways just to help the victims. And it’s sad to start the first quarter of the year with such calamities. We should take good care of our environment because it’s getting worse. Thanks.

Congrats for the effort on finding a way to donate to those people. “John”, there are lots of web pages, including the red cross, that you can donate to Haiti.

With all of the attention on the recent Haitian earthquake I feel the folks of Malawi are being overlooked. The Haitian tragedy was awful but we need to remember all of those in need. Thank you for bringing attention to this.
