Ad-hoc gatherings, known as barcamps, which are born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment have been taking place all over the world since 2005. These meetings are open and their content is provided by participants.
Malawian geeks will hold their first ever barcamp at Sunbird Capital Hotel, Lilongwe, Malawi, on 17th and 18th July, 2010. The major objectives will be to:
- Create a central node for ongoing conversations and connections on the most important technological initiatives in Malawi.
- Showcase success stories by Individuals and Organizations in Malawi and allowing them to share and further their visions
- Create a platform where the best technology ideas and products can be supported, sponsored and promoted.
- Shift the conversation from problems to solutions facing technology adoption, integration and regulation in Malawi.
According to Soyapi Mumba , who is one of the organizers, this event has been sponsored by Google and several other local sponsors. Speakers will include enginneers from Google and leading technology organisations and startups in Malawi.
The event will be free but the number of participants is limited due to space. Those who want to take part in this barcamp are advised to register as soon as possible, before it is fully booked.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackIts wonderful to have such a thing happening in Malawi. As an IT Specialist, this is my time to learn more and explore more and enjoy more believing in mind that I’ll meet people who can solve the “Open Source Software” and “Software Security” Issues that I have.
I’ll try my best not to let this chance go.
It comes once. I can’t wait.
Big thanks should go to the Sponsors (Google and our own local sponsors.)

Sounds like great way to support the local discussion. It is great that Google is getting into stuff like this. Are they going to hold one again this year?
