With effect from 1st August 2010, Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM) and Zain (Malawi) are both charging for their services in Malawi Kwacha. This comes after consumer rights bodies criticized the mobile operators for discreetly pegging their rates to the United States dollar.

It is good to see that our currency is given the respect that it deserves. Next, we would like to see the mobile operators reducing their tariffs, which are said to be among the highest in the region.
Meanwhile, Zain Malawi, who are re-branding to AirTel , have announced the appointment of 37 year old Saulos Chilima as a new Managing Director. He is replacing Fayaz King who has been assigned to Zambia. Chilima has become the first Malawian manager to head the mobile operator since its inception in 1999.
Congratulations, Mr Chilima! You are a great inspiration, especially to young people. I wish you all the best of luck and look forward to seeing AirTel Malawi becoming even more successful under your leadership.

Is that really going to change the pricing strategy or they are just going to do the conversion from US dollars? Telecom Networks are getting better and technology is getting cheaper, but telecommunication prices are getting higher. Isn’t technology supposed to bring prices down with efficient mass production?

It is good to see Malawi getting respect as a currency. So much around the world is dependent on the US dollar, and that seems to have gotten a lot of people into trouble. It’s also nice to see Chilima as the first Malawian manager.

As so much trade is done in Us dollar around the world why don’t we all adopt the dollar as a currency for everyone… one curency for the whole world !
