On 20 April, 2020, Andry Rajoelina, Madagascar’s President launched Covid Organics (CVO), a herbal medicine that, he believes, can prevent and cure patients suffering from COVID-19.

CVO is developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research. It contains Artemisia, a plant cultivated on the Big Island to fight against malaria. “Tests have been carried out – two people have now been cured by this treatment,” said Rajoelina at the launch of Covid Organics.

While the World Health Organization (WHO) says there is no proven cure for Covid-19, Madagascar has been distributing CVO for free in some schools that are reopening and in poor neighborhoods. The drink is also being sold for about 30 cents for an 11-ounce bottle.

It is quite interesting to see that on April 8, 2020, the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam (Germany) announced that they will collaborate with ArtemiLife Inc., a US based company and medical researchers in Denmark and Germany to test Artemisia annua plant extract and artemisinin derivatives in laboratory cell studies against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This shows that there is great potential for Madagascar’s CVO. Now the Madagascar authorities have to prove it by their Covid-19 recovery rates. So far, the statistics seem to be on the positive side.

Madagascar registered its first Covid-19 cases on 20th March, 2020. As of 30th April, 2020, Madagascar has 128 Covid-19 cases, zero deaths and 92 recoveries, which implies that there are currently 36 active Covid-19 cases.

Zero Covid-19 deaths in Madagascar and 92 recoveries
There were 38 active cases on April, 29, 2020 but the number went down to 36 on April, 30, 2020

Reunion and Rwanda and Madagascar are the only countries/regions in Africa, with more than 100 positive Covid-19 cases, that have not registered any Covid-19 deaths. I am aware of the fact that it is just early days. But it will be exciting to see how their fight against Covid-19 evolves.

Other African nations are now showing keen interest in Madagascar’s Covid Organics. I stumbled on a tweet below, by journalist Gina Sondo.

It has also been reported that Artemisia exhibits very little toxicity. So even in the event that it is not able to eradicate the Covid-19 illness, it will not have any side effects on the body.
